Thomas A. Wunder
Chief Executive Officer

Thomas A. WunderAppointed Chief Executive Officer in 2006, Mr. Wunder has overall responsibility for leadership of the Firm. Tom joined van Zelm in 1992, and was named Principal and C.O.O. in 2000. With over thirty years of experience in the built environment, Tom is a specialist in the design of mission critical systems, including data centers, call centers and infrastructure for the corporate, academic, healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, where he has demonstrated a unique ability to immerse himself in the requirements of clients whose projects are conducted under occupied conditions and in which critical corporate processes are ongoing. Tom has led a design team at van Zelm since he joined the firm. He holds the distinction of designing the first LEEDTM Gold-Certified project in Connecticut.

Steve S. Krawczynski, P.E., LEED AP
President and Chief Operating Officer

Steve S. KrawczynskiPresident and C.O.O. of van Zelm since 2006, Steve joined the firm in 1990, and was named Principal in 1995. Mr. Krawczynski maintains day-to-day oversight of van Zelmís project management teams, production management, IT, and technical departments. A LEEDTM certified professional and Certified Energy Manager, Mr. Krawczynski has an extensive background in engineering design and consultation for the built environment, and over twenty-five years of experience with healthcare, academic, industrial and commercial facilities. Steve serves on the Board of Directors of the New Britain Boys and Girls Club, and is a member of the ACE CT State Board of Directors. Steve previously served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hartford College of Engineering Technology and Architecture.

David W. Madigan, P.E., LEED AP
Senior Vice President

David W. MadiganDave is a Senior Vice President at van Zelm. A LEEDTM Accredited Professional and frequent speaker on sustainable design, Dave has worked on numerous projects with high performance design objectives, of particular note is Daveís experience in the design and planning of high efficiency, sustainable laboratory facilities and the design and implementation of campus energy conservation measures. A Principal of the Firm since 1993, Dave focuses on the unique needs of the client to ensure each projectís successful conclusion. Dave holds an M.S. degree in Building Energy Engineering from University of Colorado and a B.S.C.E. from Villanova University. Dave has been utilizing sustainable principles in his own projects since the 1980ís.

Edward D. Allen, P.E., LEED AP
Vice President

Edward D. AllenMr. Allen is a principal with van Zelm Heywood Shadford Inc., serving in this role since 2004. In addition to select project management and design activities, he serves the firm as Principal-In-Charge of Electrical Engineering Services and has oversight of the Quality Engineering Program. With a particular focus on practical sustainability, Ed has been instrumental in the conceptual development, design and project management of high efficiency buildings; renewable, cost-effective generation; power and technology systems; and Building Information Modeling (BIM). His projects have achieved LEEDTM Platinum and beyond Platinum recognition. Additional areas of experience include: Code analysis, facility and campus master planning, multi-discipline integration, energy analysis, and construction management.

Joseph F. Camean, P.E.
Vice President and Director of Power and Utility Engineering Services

Joseph F. CameanPrincipal-in-Charge of the Power and Utility group, a team of specialists providing expertise in central utility power plant design, construction administration, start-up and commissioning. Mr. Camean has over 40 years of engineering practice in the marine, industrial, waste-to-energy, chemical process, fossil and nuclear power generation sectors. Drawing from these experiences, his work includes grid scale and microgrid energy systems, with a strong focus on reliable and resilient power systems. Project technologies include solar electric and thermal, energy storage, biomass energy, large scale heat pumps as well as combined heat and power systems based on engine-generator, gas and steam turbines, high and low pressure steam and hydronic boilers, electric and absorption chiller heating and cooling plants. In addition to professional practice, Mr. Camean is an Adjunct Professor at Central Connecticut State University, School of Engineering Science and Technology, and Lecturer in Energy Technology and Policy at the University of Connecticut. He also serves as an expert engineer with the National College Credit Recommendation Service, chartered by the Board of Regents of the State University of New York, to evaluate and validate nontraditional learning programs of the engineering discipline. Mr. Camean has served on the executive committee of the Northeast Clean Heat and Power Initiative. He is a life member of the Association for Facilities Engineering, and past president of the Connecticut Power & Energy Society and past chair of the New London section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Susan H. Labas, CPSM
Senior Associate and Director of Marketing

Susan H. Labas

Susan is a Senior Associate and the Director of Marketing for van Zelm. Susan’s background includes construction management and industry environmental regulations as well as business development. She holds a B.A. from Vassar College and a Master’s Degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Susan is a member of the Board of Trustees for the American Council of Construction Education (ACCE). She serves on the Industry Advisory Board of the Central Connecticut State University Construction Management Department.  She is an officer on the Hartford Advisory Board for the ACE Mentor Program. Susan is a charter board member, past president and current program chair for the Connecticut Chapter of Professional Women in Construction.

R. Scott Madigan, P.E.
Associate

R. Scott MadiganWith over fifteen years at van Zelm, Scott has extensive experience science & laboratory, and in colleges & universities, and healthcare facilities. Named Associate in 2007, Scott manages a design team within van Zelm's Academic Practice Group. He also assists with the oversight of the Mechanical Department. Scott holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University and is registered as a Professional Engineer in multiple states.

F. Bruce Hartman
Associate

Bruce Hartman Bruce joined van Zelm in 1993, becoming an Associate in 2001. A graduate of Hartford State Technical College and Albertus Magnus College, Bruce has extensive project management experience that includes new design, expansion and renovation for all types of facilities. He is particular well-versed in the special systems requirements for healthcare and higher education. Bruce is the Director of van Zelm’s North Carolina office.

William J. Donald, CBCP
Manager of Commissioning Services

William DonaldBill has been with van Zelm since 1998, becoming Manager of Commissioning Services in 2008. He has extensive experience in building facilities management and building automation systems. Prior to joining van Zelm, Bill worked in the healthcare sector, serving as a project manager and director of engineering. Bill teaches classes in commissioning and retro commissioning through the Construction Institute Center for Professional Development at the University of Hartford. He is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers and is a Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP).
